more of a *headdesk*
Anyhow, with this, we'll be using the latest version of Alex, which is 6. Some of the libraries are still on version 5 (because these LTs will NOT update...they might have to use the computer) and there is a huge difference between several of the modules in the two versions So, the folks on v5 (and probably the few on v6) and on Library Pro need inservicing on the program. I have been asked to do this on the province wide conference day (just the LTs in our board; the province wide thing is for teachers only), even though I suggested they do a webinar type inservice with someone from Alex--I assume it was a $$ issue as to why they haven't. I don't mind doing it...well, mostly don't.
We have no Library superviosr/coodinator in our board; we're looked after by one of the HR people and the guy in charge of technology education. HE asked me if I'd do it--it took me a few days to get back to him cus I was hella busy (yeah, two schools, ~600 kids total, on 4.5 hours/day, why would I be busy???). The HR woman put the info out about the inservice BEFORE I'd replied to the TE guy. I was going to do it, yes, but honestly, you might want to make sure I really AM going to do it.
The other thing is that they want to hold the inservice at a high school that is central in regards to our board and where folks have to come from. However, I want to hold it at my larger elementary school, which isn't central, for the main reason that I have an admin log in for the computers--that was an issue last year when I did an intro to Alex to all the LTs suddenly forced to use it--we couldn't install anything on that school's comps. TE guy replied they wanted the HS cus "everyone could access it". We do have an LT in a wheelchair; however, MY school does have a lift, so the lab IS accessible to everyone, even though it's upstairs.
TE guy proceeded to tell me they have our server up and running and they can install whatever I need. That's great, but given that NO ONE HAS THEIR ALEX DATA ON THE SERVER YET, it's useless to me. There's also the fact that I've never used Alex that way yet; I'm sure it's not complicated and I'll pick it up quickly, but, dude...? I'm planning to use the demo version of Alex (which has all the features) along with some of my books/patrons/policies, so the other LTs can actually use a working library's files, to see how Alex works.
And I must be moving up in the world or something; TE guy has actually offered me some tech (either hardware or program) for all the assistance I give in regards to Alex--on and off our listserv. I'm thinking I'll get one of those snazzy new keyboards (metal one) for my iMac--I'd ask for a laptop but I'm thinking they'd just give me a POS used one. ha. Oh, they're also going to give me release time (ie, hire a sub to cover my library) to do prep work for the inservice--that almost made me faint. I'll be speaking with him tomorrow, so we'll see what happens re: location. *sigh*
